Warsaw-based CD Projekt announced Monday that it is working on the next Witcher game, making the jump from the internal REDengine to Epic’s widely used graphics system. The company gained worldwide fame for 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which followed a leap from sword-and-sorcery fantasy to futuristic dystopia with 2020 Cyberpunk 2077. Both were built using the REDengine, but Cyberpunk suffered. of a series of graphical and gameplay glitches that ruin the experience for early players.

CD Projekt’s move to Epic’s Engine for Witcher 4 on a positive note

Epic’s Unreal Engine is one of the most widely used game creation toolkits. The latest version, UE5, was showcased on the PlayStation 5 from Sony Group Corp. and Sony bought a $250 million stake in the company in 2020. The partnership with CD Projekt includes “further development and improvement of this engine to adapt it to the requirements of open-world games,” according to a request from the Polish company.

“If anyone can push the boundaries of the malleable Unreal Engine in open-world games, it’s the engineers at CD Projekt,” said Bernstein analyst Matti Littunen.

Originally a fantasy series written by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher was also adapted by Netflix Inc. in a successful live-action series starring Henry Cavill and mimicking the appearance of the titular character from the game’s design.
