Home arcade platform iiRcade becomes more customizable with a new accessory initiative, adding support for a range of third-party controllers and devices as an alternative to the traditional control sticks. It should provide players with better options for certain games that don’t naturally fit with standard arcade controls.
The initiative, which iiRcade calls the Open Arcade Accessory Platform, will begin with support for “out-of-the-box” spinners and trackball controllers, meaning you won’t need to modify anything for them to work on iiRcade. The standard iiRcade systems now available support these controllers via Bluetooth. Since the upcoming Gold Edition models will also have USB ports on the bottom of the control panel, they will also support USB connections in addition to Bluetooth.
“All new games that can make use of the accessories are still designed to work with the standard joystick controllers on both the Classic and Gold editions of iiRcade, so any owner of iiRcade can enjoy the new games without accessories are needed,” the spokesperson said. The company reports this in a press release. This seems to suggest, at least for now, that lightgun games will disappear from the menu. The only competitor making a big push in this space is Arcade1Up, as the standalone cabinets don’t require any sort of cross-game compatibility to work properly.
iiRcade recently unveiled its Gold Edition line, available with a pre-order discount for $799 before jumping to $999 after this period. The new line features a more traditional arcade form factor, a lighted tent and a new control panel that can be opened and changed without voiding the warranty. In addition to the 11 bundled games, each iiRcade system can access the online store for the purchase of additional games. You can learn more about the Gold Edition in the launch event video above.
