TikTok, which was banned in India, tops the most downloaded app charts in the world.
Indians can no longer access the TikTok app, which was banned by the government in June 2020 due to security concerns, but has continued to shine in the rest of the world. Chinese app TikTok has emerged as the most downloaded app and also the most profitable app in the world since the beginning of this year 2022, a SensorTower report confirms.
According to the report, TikTok, including Douyin on iOS in China, has maintained its position as the top-grossing non-game app across the board, as well as in Apple’s App Store. Cumulatively, TikTok has generated $821 million in consumer spending across both stores this quarter. While in the Google Play Store it got the second position as the first is Google One which brought in almost $250 million.
TikTok is the most downloaded app in the first three months of 2022
Overall, TikTok is the most downloaded app in the world with more than 187 million app installs, SensorTower data shows. Looking at the Apple App Store charts, the video-based social media platform, TikTok also recorded the maximum downloads.
While TikTok found its third spot in the Google Play charts. And the top two positions are led by Meta’s social media apps – Instagram and Facebook. In 2021 Facebook was the most downloaded app on Google Play, on the contrary, this year Instagram emerged as the most downloaded app in this space, with 125.8 million first installs.
Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store growing
According to Sensor Tower, “first-time downloads on the App Store and Google Play grew 1.1 percent year-over-year in 1Q22, reaching 36.8 billion downloads.” In fact, both app stores saw almost the same growth. The report noted that Apple’s market grew 1.2 percent year-over-year to 8.5 billion downloads, while Google’s Play Store saw a 1.1 percent year-over-year growth to 28.3 billion.
In terms of revenue, Apple’s App Store marketplace was more than double that of the Play Store, growing 5.8 percent Y/Y from $20.6 billion to $21.8 billion. And the Play Store saw about $10.7 billion in consumer spending, which is 8.5 percent down from $11.7 billion in the same quarter of 2021.
