After Elon Musk tweets about the challenges in India Tesla faces, the CEO gets offers from 3 states

After Elon Musk tweeted about the challenges Tesla faced in setting up a factory here, Telangana, Maharashtra and West Bengal invited him to do so.

Electric vehicles (EV) are the future of cars in India. That’s a given. There are several reasons for this, including increasing air pollution. The central government has been working with state governments to boost electric vehicles in the country to alleviate the dire situation. However, the largest and arguably the best manufacturer of electric cars has not acted here. We’re talking about the Elon Musk-led Tesla. The reason behind this, according to Elon Musk’s tweet, is the challenges the central government poses for Tesla in setting up a factory in India.

The CEO says taxes on imported vehicles are too high to make it worth bringing Tesla cars to India. Musk responded to a tweet from a person asking if there is an update on when Teslas will launch in India. In response, Elon Musk said he still faces many “challenges” with the government. “We are still working on many challenges with the government,” Musk tweeted.

India currently levies customs duties ranging from 60-100 percent on imported cars. A 100 percent duty is levied on fully imported cars with a CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) value of more than USD 40,000, 60 percent is levied on cars that cost less than the amount.

According to a report by HT Auto, the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus alone costs less than $40,000. Therefore, if Tesla has to import Model 3 to India through a fully built unit route, it is expected to cost around 70 million.

However, Elon’s tweet has prompted a quick response from certain states in India, even though the central government has yet to respond. These states are Telangana, Maharashtra and West Bengal, and they have invited Musk to set up a Tesla factory in their states.

Jayant Patil, Maharashtra’s Water Resources Minister, replied to Musk’s tweet that he is still working on many challenges… saying that the state will provide him with all necessary assistance to settle in India.

[email protected], Maharashtra is one of the most progressive states in India. We will provide you all the necessary help from Maharashtra to settle in India. We invite you to establish your factory in Maharashtra,” he tweeted.

The government of West Bengal also replied that Bengal means business and the state has the best infrastructure. West Bengal Minister Md Ghulam Rabbani tweeted: “Come over here, we in West Bengal have the best infrastructure and our leader @MamataOfficial has the vision. Bengal means business…”

However, it was the Telangana government that got the ball rolling and was the first to respond to Elon’s tweet. It expressed interest in working with Tesla in solving the challenges of establishing a store in Telangana.

“Hello Elon, I am the Minister of Industry and Commerce of the State of Telangana in India. Will gladly take up the challenges of shopping in India/Telangana together with Tesla. Our state is a champion of sustainability initiatives and a premier business destination in India” KT Rama Rao wrote on Twitter.
